The spanish anchored both flanks for some reason. On my flank I had Gazan and Bagration pushing on one side of the river to cave in the French right. It was held by a token force of poles and two small french cavalry corp.
Across the river Gortchacov held the river line and fired cannon (where line of site permitted). He would soon realize he need to push toward the Centre Right to help avoid the collapse of our forces in the centre and right flank.
Poor command die rolls (pips) made for a slow advance on this side. Cannon are particularly hard to get moving foward on the attack, and the Poles were well played by a new player, Garret, constantly giving just enough ground and launching local counter attacks to prevent overly aggressive advances. The Cavalry was able to hide behind the tree line from Gortsachov and made for difficult opponents to hunt.
The flank was largely a side show for the game but very late in the game this flank was busted open and left a (long) march towards the french LOC, held by a small but credible force.
More pics after the break...
Initial setup of (largely) 2 vs 1 corp.
Bagration on the left, Gazan on the right, Gortsachov across the river.
Poles in the lovely purplish.
Immediately the poles began to take casualties from the cannon mis match (>3:1)
While the initial advances were swift they rapidly bogged down with poor 'pip' (command) rolls.
Rules edits have made falling back in good order even harder. To a certain extend the Poles were standing and dying by cannonade more so than fights, but here we see the first push into combat.
The poles generally gave good accounts in fights, probably winning slightly more than they lost.
Despite overwhelming numbers some magic forcefield prevented excessive widening of the line and the spano-russians were forced to attack along a constricted front, benefitting the defenders.
The Russo-Spanish were a bit under the gun considering the pressure on their right flank. Everyone at the table was trying to crack corps so that the general loss of morale (a corp loss causes a moral hit to every other corp on your side) would make for a more dangerous situation in the critical areas.
Since there were 3 corp on this side show flank there was still some legitimate ability to influence the larger battle.
We see the French falling back in a smaller tighter bunch. Eventually more Russian artillery was sent to this side and the ensuing cannonade disappeared the Poles and one of two cavalry corp.
Almost every corp on the table was at bare bones morale at this point with each base lost meaning a 1 in 3 chance of the whole corp routing away in a puff of smoke.
Additionally the french LOC was largely uncovered and both the right flank and centre began a steady push towards it.
