Imperial Skies - French fleet (1) - Brigade Aeronefs

I kickstarted the imperial skies ruleset. It was done by Robin Fitton of Rottenlead blog who also wrote Gruntz so I was easily hooked. Once again, figs delivered a few years ago I'm sure, and they are just getting paint now. *sigh*. I ended up with two fleets so I should get cracking on the other one and then maybe I can actually try the game!

These figs are from Brigade miniatures Aeronef line. I was quite interested in aeronef but reading into the rules it sounded as they they were quite dated and (I supect) clunky. A rules freshen up was just what it took to get me in.

These two squadrons are the destroyers. I think destroyer is as small as it gets for the nefs.

The paint jobs I'm a bit meh on. They look a bit too grotty. Really annoyingly the lines (silk thread) tend to rip off the paint from the bare metal. Cool looking, but I forsee repeat repairs in the future.

  1. Interesting subject DaveB. I don't think I have seen anyone else who is painting Brigade's Aeronef minis.

    1. Yes, it's strange. I feel like aeronefs 'should be' more popular than they 'are'. Maybe I'm just seeing the wrong blogs? Or maybe they passed through a phase. Imperial skies had 168 backers...where are the painted nefs?

  2. These look fun. I've been messing around with naval games myself over the last year or so and having a good time with them. The paint jobs look great, but I can see what you're saying about the lines. I'd think about just leaving them off. The models would probably look just fine without them.

    1. I'll try the second fleet without. It's certainly easier to add the rigging than take it away. What era and rules are you using for naval stuff?

    2. My friend and I have gotten into WW 2. I am doing Atlantic War stuff and he is doing Pacific. So far we have been using Mongoose Games' Victory at Sea rule set. It's been a great introductory game, but it is also very beer and pretzels and that is starting to feel a bit limiting so we are thinking about trying some other rules as well. Painting up some of my stuff now and may post it later this month.

    3. ww2 has such a huge range of ships and equipment. I'm sure it will keep you entertained for a while. I have some some spectacularly crunchy naval rule sets being run at the local convention. No doubt there is a happy middle ground somewhere...

    4. We've really been enjoying it, though I've been running into some modeling problems of my own...the conning towers on my GHQ U-boats are so incredibly delicate and tiny that if you breathe on them hard they fly off, and they're so small that once they're off you can forget about getting them back on. ha.

  3. Nice looking air ships. Following your blog now. If you like Oldhammer you should check out facebook. There's a lot of noise, but also some good people putting out some excellent figures and scenery.

    1. Haha, yes I follow a bit of the oldhammer stuff on facebook. I rather prefer the format of blogs to the endless single column of facebook though. I'd rather see the blogosphere live on, so I usually try and comment directly on blogs rather than facebook posts.

  4. Hi Dave,
I know I've tried to leave a comment here like 3 times, but they keep not posting. Weird.
Anyway, nice looking ships, but I think the silk lines really add that extra pop. If you can find a way to stop them from stripping the paint, I'd keep them.

    Great stuff

    1. Sorry to hear that Major. Maybe a script blocker issue?
Perhaps I can drill hole to attach the lines directly the the metal, rather than having layers of paint/primer that can pop up....
