Yet another Bones figure done for the Caffeineforge blog lineup. In hindsight, blue is not a particularly 'autumn' colour I suppose.
Numerous critiques here, looking at the mini under the unforgiving camera eyeball. Black hair is hard to do well, without it looking shot with grey. The staff is under highlighted (in fact, I don't think I did it at all). I probably should have gone with less metallics (such as her shin guards). The right thigh is a bit rough, so makes the skin job look much worse than I think it is.
I was hoping for a very light, ethereal blue, but I suppose I lack the paints to achieve that. I'm okay with the final blue colour, but it's not what I originally set forth to do. I feel like this mini could easily be more than it currently is, but I'm not sure what I'd need to add to get there.
One more down on the Bones marathon endeavor.
The pose is very awkward too, so that doesn't help. But overall I think you are being a bit harsh on your efforts. I like the blue, it could easily also be a heavily shaded white.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, it could be white, couldn't it. It's actually a blue though. I wonder how much of that is the strangeness of photography, or maybe just the eye illusion of colour against other colour. Is the dress gold or black?
DeleteI actually really like that blue shade that you've gone for! I agree with Dai regarding the awkward pose - I do find that some of the Bones stuff tends to suffer from that! Still, a lovely end result :)
ReplyDeleteThe staff certainly has a weird curve. Thanks for the positive comments.
ReplyDeleteI really like your colour palate even if its not 'autumn' - that blue is beautiful and really suits her. I think you did a great job in shading the dress too. Ive have yet to figure out how to shade black hair nicely without giving the figure grey streaks - maybe a brown highlight?
ReplyDeleteI remember reading an article years ago about 'rich blacks' that were actually really dark shades of blue or......some other colour. I went hunting and came up short. This was somewhat useful:

If you're going for a "better than tabletop" sort of paintjob, then you start looking at painting on the highlights and washing with dark inks. I recommend the VMC line, because you can get some wonderful nearly-black greys (Black Grey and German Grey are both great for highlighting black). Once you've got the highlights on, you then go with the dark ink color for a wash. Blue or Purple with Black ink tends to leave a feel of a glossy cold black, the sort of black you associate with beetle shells, the feathers of a crow or raven, or certain black hair colors (Asians especially). Using brown or chestnut inks tends to give a warmer black and would give you the sort of black hair you see more on those of European or northern African descent. You can also do more exotic colors; I've seen some blacks washed with green or red to give them a sort of sci-fi otherworldly feel."

Thanks, I will have to try that. Definitely an interesting read.
